Trying to find family of Margaret Holmes
« on: Sunday 26 November 17 11:40 GMT (UK) »
My 3rd great grandmother, Margaret Holmes was brought to Sydney Australia on the Thomas Arbuthnot. She arrived in Australia in 1850. She is listed as an orphan, from a workhouse in Galway. Parents were John and Mary. Wondering if anyone has any links to her family in Ireland? Or knows how I might get more information?  Thanks.

Hello & welcome to Roots Chat.  I notice on Margarets ships record she originated in Loughrea Co Galway.  As her birth was before the start of Civil Registration you will have to rely on Church Baptism records.  Did Margaret marry & if so does it name her father and occupation. On her death are her parents names mentioned. Do you know if Margaret had any siblings?

Hello and welcome  ;)

Do you have a year of birth for Margaret?

Heywood

Added - I have seen it in the ship record - 1834

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Margaret is recorded as being 16 on arrival in Oz in 1850. Marriage records have her birth as 1834

Place of origin on the manifest is just Galway, nothing else.  Be aware that if you are using Ancestry all of the places of origin in the indexes of assisted passengers are incorrect.  There was a glitch about 4 years ago which caused all the entries to jump several lines and Ancestry have advised that they have no intention of correcting it.  I don't think they know how.

Hi.  Margaret is also my 3rd gt grandmother.  I am descended from Patrick.  Margaret had many children.  Which line are you from?  I have been searching to go back further for many years but keep coming up blank.  There is a book called "a decent set of Girls".  About the journey on the Thomas Arbuthnot.

Hi,

Ok, so the basics that I have are:
Margaret and John had 5 boys
Michael:  1851-1942.  Married Isabella Carbines.  Had 7 girls and 2 boys
John Gallagher:  1853 - 1870
Thomas Gallagher: 1854 -
James Gallagher - 1856 - 1906
Patrick Gallagher - 1860 - 1927.  Married Kate Collins.  Had 4 boys and 2 girls.

Margaret Holmes remarried Thomas Cassidy.
They had the following children
Margaret Cassidy 1863 - 1945.  Married Francis Ponchard
Louisa Cassidy 1865 - 1928.  Married Frank Guy
Catherine Cassidy 1866-1866
Amelia Cassidy 1868-1934.  Married James Hussey
Mary Cassidy 1870 - 1954.

Margaret Holmes died in 1888 Bellingerambil, Hillston.

have a look at Trove, particularly for all the surnames related to Cassidy family in Hillston.  Very interesting reading indeed!, but quite sad really.
