GRO - Marriage Entry Cancelled, so no certificate can be issued
« on: Monday 27 November 17 17:40 GMT (UK) »
I sent away for a marriage record for gg grandparnets (Michael Rafferty and Mary Darby, Kilcoo, Co Down), I have the date if the wedding, and the volume number, page etc (Found via Irish Genealogy)

Unfortunately, the wedding was in 1867, so no image available, and I have also checked GRONI, and no details on it.

However the replay I got was that the marriage was entered in the register in Oct 1867, but the entry was cancelled in Jan 1868, so the certificate cannot be issued.

Would anyone know why a marriage entry would be cancelled?

The couple had 10 children from Aug 1868 to 1890!

I have a few possibilities for the parents of Michael and Mary, and would love to have been able to confirm this with a marriage cert!

I'd be tempted to ring Roscommon and ask them if they can tell you. Usually when there's an amendment or a deletion to an entry in the statutory registers there's an explanation for the change written alongside the original entry.

Thanks everyone

I have sent an e-mail off to Roscommon, to see if they can help.

Where can you see the LDS images - is there any LDS libraries in Co Down or Belfast?

I don't think FamilySearch would have been allowed access to the GRO registry books, if they have an image it's likely to be just of the index book and not the cert.
They have only recently started having images of certs (limited access) since Irish Genealogy put them online
those they have images of so far are here (it's a work in progress)
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2659409?collectionNameFilter=false
I don't see your Mary Darby there yet.
(not to be confused with https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347?collectionNameFilter=false which is index only)

IrishGenalogy hopes to have all the historic certs online by mid 2018, you should be able to see the page than, in the meantime the best idea is to ring Roscommon,

I have got an answer from Roscommon, and they have sent me the certificate - which has confirmed what I already thought re bride and groom fathers.

As for the reason it was cancelled, I can't read it well, I have posted on the handwriting board
