Little Thatch , Whitchurch...information
« on: Tuesday 28 November 17 15:56 GMT (UK) »
Ref . my paternal grandfather Frederick William Kirby b . Keynsham ( District )
Dec . 1/4 1919 5c 896  -  mothers surname - Fisher

Family information has always believed him having been born at the Little Thatch in Whitchurch . I know when I lived in the area nearly 20 years ago that this was a restaurant on the A37 and had been for a long time .

Frederick was born into an Ag . Lab family and it was pos . a farm ?  I remember as a kid myself with the post war builds that it was still an area of many green fields and lots of farm look outbuildings still within what I viewed as a village  .
Possibly he was b . in surrounding farm cottages ??? on site..I just don't know .

I am unsure of the exact date of the family move to Hebron Road in Bedminster but I know my great aunt was born here in Sept 1/4 1921 . If the move was post 1921 census date , there is a fair chance their family residence in Whitchurch will show on this census when in the public domain .
I hope someone with local knowledge or dated pictures maybe able to advise on the building ( s ) past / dates etc.. .
With thanks for any help .

The Little Thatch is a Grade II Listed Building.
According to BritishListedBuildings.co.uk it was built in the 18th Century?

Looking at Know Your Place (http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/kyp) and comparing present day maps with a 1921-1943 OS map, it looks as though the Little Thatch was called White Cross Court (Hence Whitecross Avenue?), with the Manor House on the other side of the road.

It does look very rural, though.

Keynsham RD had the following sub-districts:
Bitton, Keynsham, Kingswood, Newton, Oldland.

Whitchurch was almost certainly under the Keynsham sub-district?
