1939 register mistranscription

Whilst hunting for ancient relatives, I came across a lodger whose occupation is shown as "Carnally Embroidery Machinist.

However, I'm pretty sure you'll find it should be "Cornely embroidery machinist". That's a specific type of embroidery machine which uses a barbed needle to draw a single thread up through the fabric forming a chain stitch. The machinist winds a handle whilst keeping the clutch engaged in order to steer the fabric in all directions. They are still in use. Google both the machine, and the textile artist Alice Kettle (I'm nowhere near as gifted as she is). Great fun to use, but rather like patting your head and rubbing your belly all at once.

I was not criticising the error, just enjoying it.

Many volunteers do a really good job and occasionally create some entertainment.

In addition I know now what a Cornely embroidery machine does
