Could have made his money droving cattle Bronwen or even one of the gentry, the latter would be good as there could be a family tree?

My own Ross was Christina Ross wife of Donald Mackenzie, Fearn, son Andrew born 16th Sep' 1811. They have a stone at Fearn Abbey marked with their initials. Beyond that I know nothing of Christina. My ggg grandparents.

Skoosh.

Bronwen, you're in luck, found this on MacGeorge, your man was the tacksman of Mulderg in Fearn,

Hi   Thanks for this but I am not sure that that is the right family Skoosh.  Here is what I have, complicated by the fact that there are 2 x Ross families and 2  x Munro  families.  I was hoping to attach it as a doc which would be easier, shows the highlights I have on some things, but it wouldn't take that (I have to send 2 emails to fit my stuff in anyway).   I have  also attached the  two other births that if you have the time you could compare with William's to see if the occupation is correct.   Regards Bronwen

You've certainly put the work in Bronwen, the witness Gon could be Gow?  I have the Ross's of Balintore Farm, Alexander Ross married my g'grannies sister Christina Mackenzie, so 1900's. That's near Tullich. Have you found anything on the Tain site, Ross thread?

Maybe you should join the Highland Family History Society?

Yes I should have joined the Highland family History society before I started really.

Thanks for that Gow instad of Gon I will have another look at it.
I am not sure when you say the Tain site, I couldn't find a site specific to Tain?

On my tree I have John Ross alias MacGeorge his son is William Ross alias Braughter/Brachter/Braughter is this common that someone's son would have a different alias.

Regards & thanks Bronwen

Bronwen, the Tain site is,

 www.tainmuseum.org.uk/

Individuals also had nicknames as well as their family by-name, they were called tee-names on the other side of the Moray Firth. Brachter is a question for the Tain Museum, an occupation?

That is great Skoosh, I hadn't thought about the name possibly being  to do with an occupation.  I had been on the Tain  Museum site before, I shall  have another look at it.  I have joined up with the Highland Family History Society.
Many thanks
