Robey and Battersby in Ontario
« on: Wednesday 29 November 17 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Whilst researching the Robey family in the Kearsley, Lancashire, England area I was given two letters from relatives in Guelph Ontario to the Robey family in England.  Unfortunately there were no surnames on the letters.  I am trying to trace this branch of the family but no success so far so I wondered if anyone on Rootschat could help.

The info I gleaned from the letters are as follows:

Letter 1

Sent to William Robey 1874-1960 Stoneclough, Lancashire husband of Emily Walker

Dec 4 1946
31 Queen St
Guelph Ontario
to Uncle Will
Auntie in nursing home
Ileen (Ilene?) not in Guelph, now in Brampton
Ada in US
Eldest boy out of army – Regimental pay sergeant at Camp Debert Nova Scotia
   25 in Feb 1947 (b 1922)
Stanley 18 (b 1928)
Both look like Tom (Father?)
Stan
Billie
Dan’s family live in US – Detroit – 2 boys Bobby 1938; Bruce 1936

From Niece – Annie

Envelope 11 Aug 1941 not 1946 so not original letter
33 Palmer Street, Guelph

Letter 2
To Ada Roberts (nee Robey - William's daughter) 1913-1992 Stoneclough, Lancashire, England
Has "MacCarthy ?" hand written in modern ballpoint on envelope

To Ada
28 Nov 1950
Carol and Sylvia (Ada's daughter) about the same age ~ b 1940
Anne our eldest is in High School
Mother the same health – Annie??
From Ilene

I have found one Robey who emigrated to Canada but I have not established a connection between them and the letter writers:

Mary Hannah Robey b 1877 in Kearsley, Lancashire.
MHR married Alfred Battersby (b 1879 Farnworth), Lancashire in 1899 in Bolton.
They emigrated to Canada in 1902 and 1903 and ended up in Toronto according to the 1911 Ontario Census.

They had 4 sons and 3 daughters.
One son, Kenneth died in January, 2017

I have the whole tree on Ancestry.

I have not been able to find out much due to the lack of info on 20th century BMD online accessible.

If anyone can help with any aspect of this I would be very grateful.

Regards
David Brandreth
Grandson of Margaret Alice Robey (1898-1997)

Hello and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :).

This looks like your family in the 1921 census, living in Toronto....from Library and Archives Canada. Mary's father is living with the family.

Wow!!

I have been researching Maureen's reply and find that:

Annie Halliwell in Guelph is the daughter of Nancy Jane Walker who is the sister of Emily Walker who is my great grandmother!!  Not sure why but the address in the census of 1921 is #35 whereas my correspondence says #33 in 1941.  I have found the Schofields in the 1911 England Census living in Farnworth.  Nancy J Walker was in my ancestry tree but I had not retrogressed her beyond 1911.

I have just found that Nancy Jane remarried in 1926 to William Henry Busley in Wellington, Ontario.

That all takes me a huge step forward, now I will no doubt find loads more Canadian family.  Now to check out the other reply.

I have been researching the history of many families over the last 10 years or so and this is the first time I have posted on Rootschat, I now feel like I have been adopted by a worldwide family - Thank You all.

Incidentally I was born in Manchester, England but emigrated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1982 and returned to England 26 years later so I too am a Canuck.  I have 3 daughters living in Calgary.

Thanks Polar Bear

Yes I had found that entry in the 1921 Census, Samuel came over later on in 1919.  His second wife had died in 1915 so I figure he decided to go join his daughter in Canada.  He died in 1926.

Annie had a brother Daniel Walker Schofield who in 1940 is living Gross Point, Wayne, Michigan.  Married to Laura 35 born Canada with sons Bruce 4 b. Michigan and Robert 2 b. Michigan.    Daniel died 13 Aug 1988 Gross Point Michigan.  He emigrated in 1920 with destination Guelph and passage paid by brother Stanley 37 Palmer Street.
Stanley married Maud Henshall and died in 1974 Victoria, B.C.

So sister Alice WALKER marries a Charles MOBEY and they end up at 33 Palmer St Guelph with daughter Ilene. I wondered who she was!!

Ilene marries William Ewart McCartney 1933 in Guelph.

Sorry, you probably had that figured out but it was bothering me. :) :)

Stanley Schofield served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in WW1. Library and Archives Canada has digitized his complete military file and it is free to view. Click on the digitized service file - PDF part way down the page at this link. It will be VERY slow to download.
