Have you looked for a marriage for him on Scotlands People?  His marriage cert will give you his parents names and his mothers maiden name

The free index on SP has a marriage in 1940 to an Annie McGill Kerr in Rutherglen

You can download the marriage cert by buying credits

Did they have a child before he died?  Is that child your ancestor?  If yes - the childs birth cert will confirm Annie's maiden name
