Advice for ordering a mistranscribed cert please
« on: Thursday 30 November 17 10:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I have tried to order a marriage cert for Emma Gardiner & Jesse Phelps but have been unsuccessful due to (I think) Jesse's page no being mis-transcribed. I have found both via Ancestry and looking at the original records both are recorded as having married in Stroud Glos Dec 1862 -vol 6a pg 589.  However  the info given by Ancestry shows Jesse as vol 6a pg 580 I tried requesting the cert using just Emma's full name and her father's name but the GRO kindly returned my money saying the names didn't match the info given so I'm not sure if myself and quite a few others on Ancestry have the wrong Emma married to Jesse or somehow I didn't complete the form correctly.  Any ideas anyone what I can do next to confirm this either way. ???

You only need to include one spouse's name in the order form (and not that of her father).  But if the GRO have already told you that Emma's father's details don't match what you had, could it be the wrong marriage for your research?

If you want the certificate regardless of who Emma's father is, just order it using her details alone.

FreeBMD has that ref (add -  Stroud Glos Dec 1862 -vol 6a pg 589)  with Jesse Phelps in normal font rahter than bold.

In my experience, I'd give the minimum info required - i.e. Emma Gardiner and the GRO ref only.

I see that avm has also suggested this.

It looks like vol6a p589 is the correct one, but in any case where there is a problem like this I always order from  the local registration office - they are taking the entry from the original record, not a copy, and they usually arrive  more quickly than from GRO.

Hi All

Many thanks for your responses.  I've been chasing Emma and her marriage for many years buying the cert was the only way I could think of to move things forward.  I've now spent the morning looking for the advice slip returned by the GRO as I'm sure it referred to her father as the groom or something like that but as were in the process of moving house I've probably packed it, but it was because of this I was trying to find other ways of getting the cert. I'll try the other suggestions i.e. giving the most basic of details and contacting the local registry office.

Again my thanks.

Just to clarify a little.  Both entries for Jesse Phelps are in normal type, rather than bold, because the transcriptions have been made by two different people, one has interpreted the number as 580 and the other as 589.  Had they both agreed, then the entry would be in bold.

(As a FreeBMD transcriber, I will report the required correction)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi Gadget

Thanks for that I did wonder what the difference was between bold and normal.  Will the correction be made and will it make any difference.

Not quite sure about what you mean by "will the correction make any difference"?  I have only reported the mistranscription to FreeBMD, which in itself is a transcription of the GRO records and it refers only to the transcription of the page number.  The correction will make no difference at all to the records held by GRO and the local Register Office.

The marriage took place at Stroud Register Office:
