NASH Family of Chiseldon
« on: Thursday 30 November 17 16:40 GMT (UK) »
My maternal ggg grandfather Charles NASH was born in Chiseldon in 1835. He is recorded in the 1841 Census with his mother Jane (b.1811) and siblings living in Badbury. Charles is lodging with the ROMANS family in 1851. He joined the army in 1854  and was stationed in Glasgow with the 76th Regiment of Foot in 1861. Around this time he married Elizabeth of County Wexford, Ireland but no record of this event can be traced in UK or Ireland. Equally their daughter Sarah Ann (my gg grandmother) was supposedly born about 1863 in Aldershot (76th Foot were stationed there around that time) but no birth/baptism record can be found. Charles was medically discharged from the army while stationed in Belfast in 1864. From the 1871 census onwards the family home became Radstock, Somerset. Charles and Elizabeth had 11 children born alive according to the 1911 Census but I have only record of 8. Charles is thought to have died in Radstock in 1916.

Looking to trace more information regarding the NASH family of Wilts, particularly the father of Charles.

Possible death of William -

William Nash

His age is recorded as 29 (GRO website), therefore born c.1811

On the 1841 there is a William born c.1840, this would appear to be his birth record showing his mother's maiden name as Acott. Therefore the marriage above seems correct.

William Nash
q2 1840, Swindon and Highworth
Vol 8 Page 325
MMN - Acott

Thank you all for your prompt replies - much for me to consider.

I omitted to say that there is the possibility that the baptism on 30 March 1862 of a Sarah Ann(e) NASH at nearby Liddington is my ancestor. However, her parents are a George and Mary. Charles had a younger brother George so perhaps she was living/being brought up as their own (1871 Census refers) since her father (but what of mother Elizabeth?) was away in the army?

Not convinced that the Sarah Ann Nash from Liddington is your ancestor as she can still be found on the 1901 as single.

I presume that your Sarah Ann married 29 Jun 1890, St James, Bath to George Nicholas Crisp.

Would you agree that this is the birth of one of Charles and Elizabeth's children? -

Charles William Nash
q4 1863, Highworth and Swindon
Vol 5a Page 20
Mother's maiden name Kerwin

If the above is correct then this could be Sarah Ann's birth -

Nash (female)
q2, Farnham 1862
Vol 2a Page 76
Mother's maiden name Kerwin
