Mark Camelin
« on: Friday 01 December 17 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Mark Camelin married Maria Anna Stephenson in 1808 in St Pancras. I think it highly likely that the 1808 baptism in St Pancras for a Mark Shipley Camolin (s John and Hannah) is him, getting baptised before his wedding. From at least 1811-13 they were living in John St, Islington.

In 1836 he is listed as one of the voters in Moreton, Essex; in the 1841 census he is back in St Pancras, aged 65-9, b Foreign Parts (he appears to have a French surname)

His wife had been left a cottage in Moreton by a Mrs Elizabeth Lock of Chipping Ongar (unknown date). She, in turn, passed the cottage on to her brother John (unknown date) as he gives all this information in his 1834 will (written 1830).

I have mentioned Mark Camelin in 2010 when posting about his wife (she was the daughter of Deborah!), but the post gives no information that isn't here:

I would like to find a little more about Mark. Ideally I would also find out who Mrs Elizabeth Lock was and why she left a cottage to Maria, but that may be a step too far.

Richard

Hello Richard,

I'm guessing you have seen this?
http://www.64regencyancestors.com/index.php?title=Research_behind_the_Stephensons

Thomas and Deborah's children: Maria, Elizabeth and John GT baptisms  at St Sepulchre London are on family search. Have you been able to trace what happened to Elizabeth? I suppose it would be too simple if she married a Mr LOCK.  ;)

Oops, reading further I see that you are the author of that web page.  :-[

(Very interesting reading - you have put all your research together really well. Very impressive  :))

Sorry I can't help further, I've checked the newspapers, but other than the reference to Mark on the list of voters in 1836 I can't see any other references. Tried a few different spellings for CAMELIN, and tried looking for LOCK at Moreton or Chipping Ongar, but not much luck so far ...

I haven't read through it all, but there's a will for an Elizabeth Lock 1774 St.Pancras

She has property in Moreton, and mentions her gt.granddaughter Maria Anna Stevenson - "daughter of my granddaughter Deborah Stevenson"

Thank you both for looking. And thank you, particularly, for the link to the will which is definitely the right person. Having looked through lots of Elizabeth Lock wills, I'm not sure how I missed it (earlier than I thought perhaps?), but I'm, grateful that you didn't!

I dont think the 1808 Baptism is him, as it has christened 1 May 1808/Birth 5 April 1808.

I think you are probably right (as, in fact, I thought last time I looked at this topic!)

The will has made it much more likely that Maria Anna's maternal grandmother is Deborah Pugh, whose father (Richard; 1728 will) was a staymaker in St Clement Danes. That may be another co-incidence but it does add a small part to the argument that Anna Maria's paternal grandfather was also a staymaker in 1735, in St Mary le Strand, two hundred metres along the road:
