It appears from the time line on the articles, Elmer & Dorothy must have gotten married just before he shipped out to Hawaii

Elmer Cunningham, seaman second class, sent greetings to "everyone I know," and expressed hope to be home for Christmas holidays in a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cunningham of this city. He urged, "Keep on buying war bonds and stamps, folks, so not just me but all the boys can come back home sooner than next Christmas. We will do our part." Cunningham's address is United States Coast Guard, in care of Captain cf the Port, Hilo, Hawaii
