Baswich / Allstonefield
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 10:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Can anyone cast any light on why some bap's are listed on the same day as being in Baswich ( near to Stafford ) and also at Allstonefield much further north ?
The family I'm looking at belongs to John and Elizabeth Orton ( 1794 - 1804 ) .  Residence in each case seems to be Baswich and certainly the first child Jemima gives her place of birth as Acton Hill on a census.
Any suggestions please.
Regards,
robsdad.

Where have you seen these baptisms?
Were they original entries in Parish Registers?

It appears from some of the records the family's place of residence is Baswich and the Christening place is Allstonefield. Perhaps it was the church where John & Eliza married so they wanted their children Christened there too.

Yes I had thought along those lines,
but they were married in Whitmore near to Stoke and Newcastle u Lyme and their residence was Stoke.
Thanks for your input.

From FamilySearch, I can see the following baptisms:

Jemima, 19th October 1794 at St Mary Stafford

But there is this, from England Births and Christenings, 1538-1875:
Mahala Orton, 23rd March 1804 at Alstonefield, Stafford
Daughter of John and Eliza Orton (Residence: Baswick, Stafford)

Ruth Orton, 29th November 1801, at Alstonefield
Daughter of John and Eliza Orton (Residence: Baswick)

And also, from England, Staffordshire Church Records, 1538-1944:
Mahala Orton, 23rd March 1804 at Holy Trinity, Baswich or Berkswich with Walton, Stafford
Daughter of John and Eliza Orton

Ruth Orton, 29th November 1801, at Holy Trinity, Baswich or Berkswich with Walton, Stafford
Daughter of John and Eliza Orton

You really need to look at the original images, because I think that there is a transcription error in there?
(Personally, I would go with the Staffordshire records!)
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Hi,
Yes I have those and it's what prompted my confusion.
The first two children Jemima & Elizabeth seem clearly St Mary Stafford, but the remaining three seem to have this dual entry.
Thanks for your help.

The entries for Mahala and Ruth appear in the Registers of Baswich.  Images are available on FindMyPast.  This particular register commences in 1795, and is Register No: 4.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

FindMyPast has the following dates for baptisms:

St Peter, Alstonefield - 1538-1900 - no entries for Ruth or Mahala

Holy Trinity, Baswich or Berkswich - 1601-1900 - entries for both Ruth and Mahala - daughters of John and Eliza Orton.  No place of residence quoted in either entry.

Jemima - daughter of John and Elizabeth Orton - baptised 19 October 1794.
