A GRIFFIN, RICHMOND, HAMBLIN mystery
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 11:37 GMT (UK) »
This family does get a bit confusing, but I hope I have mentioned the key facts.

The 1891 census for 2 Ashby’s Cottages, New Heston [RG12/1024  f 160  p17] has

Hamblen, Joshua, head,  53, born Bremton [sic] BRK
Hamblen, Jane, wife, 52, born Newbury BRK
Richmond, John, son, widower,  26, born Newbury BRK
Richmond, John, grandson, 1, born London

In 1901 they are at 11 Manor Cottages, Trundley Road, Deptford [RG13/525  f 114  p 71]

Hamblin, Joshua, head, 63, born Brimpton BRK
Hamblin, Jane, wife, 61, born Newbury BRK
Hamblin, William, son, unmarried, 24, born Deptford LND
Hamblin, John, grandson,    11,  born Deptford LND

A few streets away at 24 Oldfield Road, Deptford  [RG13/525 f 181  p 50] is the son, John Thomas Richmond. He had married Sarah Ann Stone at Rotherhithe on 29 January 1899, when he was described as a widower.

Jane Richmond, nee Griffin, had run away with Joshua Hamblin in the late 1860’s and they did not actually marry until August 1900.

For years I have been stumped with

1)   the first marriage of John Thomas Richmond
2)   the birth of his [?] son, John
3)   the birth of Joshua and Jane’s son, William

I wonder if Rootswebers can help find these details ?

Shows John Richmond with several children living in Newbury. The youngest is 4yrs Lucy with mother’s name Griffin.

John is married and a Hawker.

Sorry, this then is Jane’s first husband and children -just working my way through it all.

The 1881 census Newbarn Cottages Cudham
Joshua Hamblin 43 farm servant Berks NK
Jane 43                         Newbury
John Richmon 19   farm servant Newbury
William Griffin 5 visitor Rotherhithe

So could William be registered as Griffin ?
William Griffin Mar 1875 Shoreditch 1c 145 (no mother's name so illegitimate.)

I didn't include 1881 in my original post, just to keep it a bit simpler.

It's tempting to think William could be Jane and Joshua's son - but why is he described as "visitor" instead.

I suspect he is Jane's grandson - the son of William Richmond (b 1854) who married Emma Craddock in 1874. William used the surname Griffin

I replied to Heywood, but must have pressed a wrong button as it's not showing.

John Richmond senior was my 2xgreat grandfather, and Lucy was my great grandmother.

in 1871, Jane and Joshua Hamblin were in Oxford RG10/1440 f 69 p 37

Most of the children stayed in Newbury although William (b 1854), Elizabeth Jane (b 1859) and John Thomas (b 1861) ended up in the Rotherhite/Bermondsey area.

Hi,
I have been following and am up to date. I saw the baptism of William Charles and made the connection too and see that William is back with his family in the next census.  :)
