Mystery grandmother to find anyone up to a challenge?
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 16:06 GMT (UK) »
This mystery covers two counties so I have posted it here.

Sarah Hill is listed as grandmother on 1911 census showing she was born in Nantwich Cheshire approximately 1842. The family were residing in Bootle. There are also two children shown on the census return.
The family she is with are Samuel Ellis Anderson born 1884 and his wife Emily, Maiden name Hall.
Emily’s parents were Emanuel and Mary.
Samuel’s parents were Walter and Louisa.
So who is the mystery Grandmother shown on then 1911 census and how does she link to this family?
I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on who I can solve this little mystery.
Thanks in advance

It is written very clearly Sarah HILL on the census this is what confused me. Even if the surname had be recorded wrong the first names do not tie in? She is also clearly identified as grandmother?

Could she have been the grandmother of the children - or a parent - via a first marriage? Her birthplace looks more like Northwich to me.

In 1901 a Richard (61) and a Sarah Hall ( 58) both born Northwich (?) are in a lodging house in Rochdale, fairly nearby - could that be any help?

As far as I have been able to see from census information etc this is the first marriage for both parents. It is my husbands family so I’m not as familiar with their history as mine.
Sorry Northwich is correct I was typing from memory. She is listed as a widow in 1911 can any one find her on the 1901census?

Yes, she's  a widow (57) living in Bootle - her birthplace is given as Northwich and she's with her daughter Eliza Hill (17) and grandsons James (18) and John (16) Hill - all 3 born in Birkenhead.

Could she be a great grandmother to your Emily?

I have found a Sarah Hill born 1844 in Northwich living in Bootle in the 1901census ref 3459/124/15/69
She is living with her daughter Eliza and two grandsons. I’m going to see if I can link this Sarah to my family in the 1911census.

Thanks for the help

I think she's the mother of Louisa MILLS (Samuel's mother).

She marries John HILL 1873 Birkenhead.
