Folsom prisoner 1940
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 19:38 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered a relative on the 1940 US census in Folsom prison, and I would like to know why he was there.

The census names him as Garfield PASCOE, age 61, born Michigan (the columns for 1935 location are blank)
On the 1901 census he is a copper miner living with his parents (Richard and Angelina) in Calumet Township, Houghton County, Michigan.  After that, I have lost track of him.

G00gle, Fam1lySearch and FindMyPast(uk sub) have not yielded any results, so I am hoping some kind and knowledgeable Rootschatter can point me in the right direction to find out why Garfield was in prison.

Try Chronicling America:  https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/pages/results/?state=&date1=1789&date2=1943&proxtext=%22Garfield+Pascoe%22&dateFilterType=yearRange&rows=20&searchType=basic&x=0&y=0

There seem to be several articles that might be this man.  The fourth one on the top row seems to give background information--being a miner, journalist, banker, etc.  Some mention him as being a forger and bad check writer.

Deluth Herald - 14 August 1914

FUGITIVE CAUGHT FOR CHICAGO COPS

Garfield R. Pascoe, 34 years old, who walked out of the Bertillon room at the South Clark street police station In Chicago on Wednesday, Aug. 5. after having been bound over to the Cook county grand jury on a charge of forgery, was arrested in Duluth last evening by Detective Schulte just as
the fugitive was about to board a train for the West. On the evening Pascoe escaped Chief Troyer received a telegram from Chief of Detectives Halpin of Chicago to watch out for Pascoe. The message stated that Pascoe had checked his baggage to a Duluth hotel and that in all probability he would follow shortly. Detective Schulte was placed on the case and after a week's search was
successful. Pascoe is being held at headquarters until a Chicago officer arrives tomorrow.
According to the message receivfd from Chief Halpin, Pascoe was bound over to the Cook county grand jury last Wednesday morning on a charge of forgery. He is accused of having

Chief Halpin took the prisoner up to the sixth floor where he turned him over to the Bertillon experts to be measured and photographed. It was while the experts were preparing for their prisoner, that Pascoe walked out of the room, down six flights of stairs and out into Clark street. The entire detective force was put on his trail, but Pascoe disappeared and that night Chief Halpin sent the message to Chief Trover. .Pascoe was married  and "lived at 4246 Calumet Avenue, Chicago.

Once again, Rootschatters have come up with stunning results.  Thank you all so much!

I did enjoy a good giggle at Sandra's find:
It was while the experts were preparing for their prisoner, that Pascoe walked out of the room, down six flights of stairs and out into Clark street. The entire detective force was put on his trail, but Pascoe disappeared

What a superb link https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ - I hadn't seen this site before.

I have another dodgy relative who was involved in the Tammany Hall corruption, so I think I'll be spending quite a lot of this weekend on chroniclingamerica!
