Hi, All the Southern Counties records are held in the Ewart library, Dumfries. If you are going though, you need to talk to the Archivist first and make sure you have the right items ordered as they are held on the other side of town. There is a project at the moment to index these records and they will probably end up on https://info.dumgal.gov.uk/HistoricalIndexes/  But for the moment, the Ewart library is the place to go.

Suggest you google Dumfries Asylum - huge number of records for it have been digitised by the Wellcome Library. It might, however, involve a lot of browsing!

I know that the Welcome Trust are involved in the digitisation that is going on right now. Perhaps they will have them online soon.

Perhaps I missed it, but are you able to search patient records via the Wellcome digitised collection?

Kate, do you have Peter's death certificate?

The Wellcome Library page for Crichton Royal  Hospital  states  that  the digitised archive covers the period from 1823 - 2008 and includes records on patients admissions and casenotes from 1838-1913.
