Deceasedonline
« on: Monday 04 December 17 12:55 GMT (UK) »
I've just revisited deceasedonline, and found that information which was previously freely available is now chargeable.

Previously, it was possible to work out which was your relative, because the name of the cemetery or crematorium was shown in search results. Now just the county is given.

Note that not even the name of the local authority who have subcontracted the service to them is shown, so Bolton records are shown as "Lancashire".

So you may have to spend a lot of cash to find a relative with a common name. >:(
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

When you login, you get to see the cemetery name, you just have to pay to see grave details and burial register scans.

My guess is that you have an account and you are generally logged in when using the site, but have somehow inadvertently logged out (or you are using a different browser, different device etc.).

Ah, looks like you might have to have purchased some credits to be able to see more details, even though credits aren't required to be spent to see these details. From their FAQ:

"You may search the index free of charge. You do not even have to be a registered user. The simple search panel at the top left of many of the pages allows you to search all records by name and date of burial or cremation, while the advanced search allows the search to be refined by location and type of record. Advanced searching is available free of charge to users who have purchased pay-per-view vouchers or a subscription."

iannounce is ok for modern stuff, post 2000 or so. It's part of the US company Legacy.com. For anything before that you have to hope that someone paid for an "In Memoriam" entry.

Deceasedonline has digitised some of the older records, taken over from local authorities. Records for Manchester's Ardwick Cemetery, for example, disappeared from the online search run by Manchester Council, and appeared on Deceasedonline. My ggggg uncle Daniel Donbavand, buried there on 20 Oct 1887, is now shown as having died on that date and buried in "Greater Manchester". His "burial date" is now 31 May 1967, which is when the cemetery was flattened to become a playing field.

For Ardwick Cemetery, Deceased Online is referring to record set RG37 from the National Archives:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13362

If you look at the 'authority' name given by Deceased Online for these records, it mentions the NA and not the local authority. As Manchester City Council is continuing to offer a burial records search facility on its website, I wonder whether it actually has any arrangement at all with Deceased Online. Maybe the Ardwick records were removed from Manchester's own search page for other reasons.
