Railway records of Frederick Walton Vickerman of Crewe during WW1
« on: Monday 04 December 17 19:32 GMT (UK) »
Dear forum members, can anyone help me with the railway records of Frederick Walton Vickerman of Crewe. I am doing a piece for his son and I am after the dates of when he was in Crewe Works around the time of the First World War (1914, 1915). He ends up being laid off and goes to work at Cammell Lairds in Birkenhead. I am basically after his entry date into the Works and the date when he leaves during WW1. Thanks very much, Mark.

If you have access to the Ancestry subscription site there are several entries for Frederick Walton Vickerman amongst the UK Railway Employment Records.

Just looking quickly down the dates (without looking at the details of each entry) --the earliest entry under that name is 3 Jun 1907 -- and the last one 31 Dec 1918 (strangely there is also one for the 30 Dec 1918).

A date mentioned in 1915 is 7 May 1915.
Each entry would need looking at to see what the filmed record of the Register book says.

F W Vickerman (b 21 Sep 1892) is also mentioned on 11 Oct 1933    at Crewe, working for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

The Crewe Works books can appear somewhat challenging - you need to understand that the main employee files are in books that have not been digitised. These are one page per employee staff books and were created when the chap entered Crewe Works - plus or minus a week or two. That means the records are in date-entered-service-in-Works order - roughly - and thus next to impossible for the Staff Office to access unless the chap remembers his (or her) date-entered-service-in-Works. (Some of these big books are at Kew, some at Chester Record Office, some were lost).

The books that Ancestry have digitised are effectively manual indexes to the big, page-per-employee books. The different books are indexes by (say) name, week-entered-the-Works or foreman, etc.

In addition, they contain quite a bit of data (one line or so per employee) enabling the Staff Office to do quite a bit of work without going to the big books.

So if you are wondering what the heck all this stuff is, yes, it does repeat.
