WW2 Merchant Seamans Record help please.
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 12:01 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to Trace any information on my deceased (d.03/01/1993) Father in Law's War Record
All that we know is that he was at Dunkirk in May 1940 presume in The Merchant Navy
We have a Photo of him in Merchant Navy Uniform when he married at St.Nicholas Church Ruins  Liverpool on 9th August 1941 and talked of doing the Artic Convoy Runs to Russia.
Yet in 1942 he was in the Army in North Allerton, Yorks when his daughter was born there.
He was also on the D- day Landings on his birthday aged 24 (b. 06/06/1920)
Anyone have any ideas where to start to trace his Military Life ?

Are you in a positon to give us his name and place of birth. North Russian convoys commenced on 29/Sept/1941, so there is a possibilty he may have been involved before joining the Army.

Fortunately his Seaman's "Pouch" seems to have survived.
These records relate to individual seamen filed together in a pouch. These documents may include application forms (most with a photograph of the seaman), certificates, identity cards, cessation documents and notifications of death.
 Available from here. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8171169
What you really need is his Form CRS10. This will tell you the vessels he served on from early 1941 together with dates and places of engagement and discharge.
If you can get hold of this you can then examine individual ships Logbooks and Crew Agreements to gain a fuller picture of his Merchant Navy career.
If anywhere it should be here. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10989390
These records are kept in blocks of 60 names catalogued alphabetically.
You would be best advised to Visit Kew yourself or appoint a researcher.

If there are no records in BT382/1165, there is an outside chance there may be something here.

These records, by and large, cover service from 1946-1972 but they have been known to turn up trumps.
