George appears to have been released on license from Chatham Prison at the end of 1869.

The case was head at court in Inverness.

I'm not sure that is the same man - I don't think someone convicted of a crime in Scotland would be sent to an English prison, especially one the other end of the country. Looks as if there are two George Maycocks.

ADDED: Looking at Ancestry there are several in Kent, so I think you can ignore the Chatham prisoner.

Sorry Groom, but I have to disagree with you. The document granting his licence clearly states he was convicted of sheep stealing at the court in Inverness in 1864. It is actually not uncommon for Scottish long term prisoners to be held in English prisons in that period. I've come across a few.

I don't know for sure he it looks like Cartwright,

George Mycock married Mary Cartwright 4th January 1827, Bakewell Derbyshire

No Jen, I was just saying that the Chatham prisoner could be George after Isobel pointed out it was the same crime and tried in the same court.

The trial date 16 oct 1864 given in the licence matches with newspaper reports of the original trial of George and Jessie ( they had quite an operation  going in sheep rustling). Jessie was also convicted and given six years but don't see any prison records for her.

The George Maycock in Chatham gives his birthplace as Hythe Saltwood and his age puts his birth year as c. 1834/1835.

Which fits exactly with this baptism at Saltwood, 7th September 1834 George Maycock, parents Edward and Susannah.

The George pharma is looking for has parents George and Mary

Jen - I agree with you that the Chatham one is unlikely. Not least because I don't think an ex- prisoner would be foreman of a water company. Given the Cartwright mmn the Derbyshire one looks much more likely.
