Help - Looking for details of soldier - George Maguire
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 13:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi All.

Doing some research on my family and looking at my Great Great Grandfather. I am trying to work what role (if any) he played in WW1. I don't have any real detail other than the following:

Name: George Maguire
Regiment: Gunner in Royal Field Artillery (this is according to his sons marriage certificate from 1916)

I think he would have been around 44 in 1916 (Born 1872) based on some previous info i think i found where he was 9 in the 1881 census and 19 at his marriage in 1891. he was a Glasgow man. Not sure if 44 was too old for him to be involved in the war or maybe he was in the army but based at home. Any help appreciated.

Not too old to go to the front, my grandfather born 1873 was at the front and wounded in 1915. Grandfather was sent home to recover - my father was born May 1916  ;)

Grandfather was in the Veterinary Corps.

Unfortunately about 70% of WW1 documents were destroyed by fire in WW2 bombardment.

Have found this

Soldier Number: 236995, Rank: Driver, Corps: Royal Field Artillery

Soldier Number: 236995, Rank: Driver, Corps: Royal Field Artillery

He died in 1918 and I think he was from Surrey.  :(

There are quite a few George Maguires in the RFA, with little or nothing to distinguish one from another. :(

Thanks STG.

This cannot be him, my GGGF lived until 1955 (83). Hmmm...this family stuff can be complex.

You could try to find out whether the district he lived in compiled an Absent Voters List in 1918.  If so, he might be mentioned on there with his service number.
