Looking for a Margaret Thompson in County Durham
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking to find the birth entry for a Margaret Thompson. She married a Albert William Sant in 1894, which lists her father as Joseph Thompson and her date of birth as around 1873. Please see the marriage certificate here: https://i.imgur.com/EZDo1V4.jpg

If you look at the 1901 census entry:

Code: [Select]
Registration district Auckland
Sub-registration district Bishop Auckland
ED, institution, or vessel 07
Piece 4643
Folio 145
Page number 16
Household schedule number 95

it says that Margaret was born in Shildon. You can see that she and Albert are living next to a 'Joseph and Hannah Thompson' - I think it is very likely that these are her parents. The 1911 census shows her place of birth as Bishop Auckland (which is very close to Shildon).

However I've really struggled to find a birth entry for Margaret either in Shildon or in Bishop Auckland. Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance

This would appear to be Margaret with her parents on the 1891 -

Joseph Thompson   44
Hannah Thompson   44
Sarah Thompson   21
Mary Thompson   19
Margaret Thompson   17 b. Shildon, Durham
RG12 Piece 4068 Folio 21 Page 38

On the marriage cert a witness is Mary Hannah Thompson (possible sister)

Marriage -

Joseph Clarkson

On the same page is Hannah Clarkson.

Have you found Margaret on the 1939 which will give you her exact birth date?

You can see that she and Albert are living next to a 'Joseph and Hannah Thompson' - I think it is very likely that these are her parents. The 1911 census shows her place of birth as Bishop Auckland (which is very close to Shildon).

Looking at the address on the 1901 for the Thompson/Sant families, they are living on South Church Lane which is the same address as that of the 1891 where Margaret is living with her parents Joseph and Hannah.

Thanks that's very helpful. I haven't found her on the 1939 yet but Ill have a look.

Would you mind telling me how you narrowed the birth entries to the one above? When I searched for a Margaret Thompson born 1873 in Auckland I found quite a few entries. Also, I think the mistake I made is searching for Bishop Auckland rather than Auckland - when you do your searches do you use that very long list of registration districts?

Looking at the 1881 census I searched for a name which has a middle name (Mary H Thompson). Find the birth of this person using FreeBMD, then find that birth on the GRO website (you need to register, it's a free service) hopefully it will record the mother's maiden name. Then try to find the other siblings births using the mother's maiden name.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

By doing a free search on the 1939 Margaret can be found living in Northampton with Robert P Sant and one other person.
