You could try phoning or emailing BDM's and ask if they could check the original register

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/contactus

It may be a transcription error

The Ivan VIVIAN mentioned in the above articles, is Ivan Douglas VIVIAN (s/o Ruby T. and Jacob B. VIVIAN of Christchurch.)

ceecee93 ... had meant to add this to your thread, earlier.

Before spending $$$  on  B D M records, you should heed the advice given above (i.e.  ask NZ BDM to check original register.)

And I also want to let you know that from a resource I have (which is not available online), I can tell you that the listing (in the index) for the marriage record of Elizabeth Emma ASHWELL and  Ivan Henry VIVIAN, shows that the groom also went by the name of
Ivan Henry GILCHRIST.

I have found no further information for this man under the name of "GILCHRIST"  though I imagine that the marriage record of the year 1939, may carry an explanation ?   However, if you wish to obtain a copy of this marriage record (-  and you should select the printout version) -  the purchase process is somewhat different as it comes under "non-historical" BDM records.  Please see the notes for "Non-historical" at NZ BDM link given above ... or ask for guidance from BDM staff.
