Southampton Row Gosport
« on: Wednesday 06 December 17 08:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I have just found my long lost Hampshire family, I'm thrilled.
In the 1841 census my George Roper b 1808 is living in Southampton Row Gosport. I've searched online but I can't find any references to this address in Gosport.
Do any chatters know anything at all about this address? Any historic street plans available? Other historic records?
I would be really grateful for any help.
All the best
Carolyn

Try looking backwards/forwards from the census entry for other streets/reference points.
There is also a description of the census district for each piece (Book?) Read that .

Hello Pauline
Many thanks for your quick reply. I now know that Southampton Row was in St George's ward. I'll press on and try to find the address on a street plan
Regards

Carolyn,

You are looking in the wrong place, although born in Gosport, he was living in Portsmouth (Portsea) in 1841 which is across the water from Gosport.

Looking at old maps I can't find it yet but will keep looking, sometimes 'rows' are part of other streets. I have found one reference that suggests it might be around Kent Street which still exists in Portsmouth.

Carolyn,

Found it. It used to go north between Kent Street and Queens Street.

Hope this link works.

Hi,

I agree that he is in Portsea. Here is another link that shows where Southampton Row was/is,

https://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101271859-the-beneficial-school-charles-dickens-ward#.WigdmWdLGrd

This link tells that Curzon House Row was built to replace White's Row. I think that was much later in 1912.

If you look for Curzon row on Google maps and go to satellite image you can see a pathway going behind the houses from Kent St. to Queen St. I think that is where Southampton Row was.

The Groundlings Theatre was once the Beneficial School,

Perhaps some of the children went there :)

This page tells more about it and even mentions "on the Southampton Row side",
