One theory on the name Gray/Grey is that it is a contraction of the old french for Chalk being Crai. Chalk mining was big business back in the day so post 1066 the Norman de Gray family took land in the areas of UK where there was chalk. There is a Grays court in Rotherfield, Oxfordshire near Bix. There is also a link with Uffington and Kingston L'isle because the de Gray family and the de L'Ilse family were linked.
