Did James FARRELL emigrate to the United States?
« on: Thursday 07 December 17 01:45 GMT (UK) »
James was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, about 1831, to Jeremiah FARRELL and Ann MUIR or MOORE.
He appears in the 1841, and 1851 censuses, in Scotland, and then I lose track of him.

I searched the American records on Family Search, and found a James FARRELL, aged 24, from Great Britain, arriving in New York in May 1854. With him was Bridget, aged 23.

On February 17th 1855, there is an Ann FARRELL, born to James, from Scotland, and Bridget, from Ireland, at Charlestown in New Hampshire.

In the 1860 census, the family, with 3 more children, Ellen, Mary, and John, is living at Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut.

In 1870, James, with Ann, Ellen, Mary and John, but with a wife called Johanna, and a child, Elizabeth, are living at New Haven, Connecticut. James, Johanna and Elizabeth are at the same place in 1880.

After this, I lose track. I haven't found a death for Bridget, a marriage for James and Johanna, or a death for James - all things that might link me back to the Scottish Farrells.

I think Johanna is living with a daughter and son in law , Timothy CONLEY, in Lewiston Town, Maine, in 1900.

To make things more complicated, There was another couple called James and Johanna FARRELL having children in Connecticut in the 1850s and 1860s. This Johanna was living with her second husband James B BOURKE, in Tolland Connecticut in 1880.

Can anyone help with records to link this James to the Ayrshire Farrell family?

There is info online which says the Johanna in Maine in 1900 was Johanna Quilgley, born Ireland about 1819, married Edward Farrell 15 Feb 1847 in New Brunswick Canada.

The Johanna on the 1900 census seems to be a widow in Lewiston city directories going back to the 1870's, so it seems likely that she was not the right one.

Interesting - the 1900 census says she was born 1829, and her age is 70. She has her son Edward with her - that should have been a clue.

In the 1891 New Haven city directory, there are a list of deaths in New Haven, and one of them was Johanna Farrell, Jan. 24, 1891, age 56.  Not sure if that's her, but thought it was a maybe.

Thanks for that, Shellyesq. I checked the Connecticut newspapers on the "Chronicling America" website, for January and February 1891, but nothing shows up for Johanna. I also searched 1880 to 1900 for "James Farrell", and there was nothing I could pin to this particular James.

I don't think this James FARRELL is my relation. James's son John, is in the 1880 census in Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut, nephew of Ellen JOHNSON. Ellen is aged 58, born 1822 in Scotland, widow.

Ellen is too old to be a sister of my James FARRELL, whose parents were married, in Scotland in 1829.

It is unlikely that Ellen is a sister of Bridget.
