Duplicate entries in GRO
« on: Thursday 07 December 17 10:17 GMT (UK) »
As part of my transcribing for FreeBMD, I have come across something a little strange.  :-\

Because it is Marriages in 1969, I won't give the names.

I have two entries for the same person - one in Taunton District and the other in Wells District.  Both page numbers are identical.  I have cross-checked for the partner, and again there are two entries in Taunton and Wells and, of course, identical page numbers.

I did wonder whether the two Districts merged, but both are in existence until 1974.

Any thoughts, anyone  :)

maybe there was an error compiling the indexes and so there are 2 entries but only one registration.

Have you taken it up with your freebmd syndicate co-ordinator?

They will advise you to enter both whatever the scenario.

One possibility comes to mind.  Could the bride and groom have been of different faiths so they married twice?  Once in the relevant faith church in the Taunton district and the other faith church in the Wells district.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that some couples did this to accommodate the families wishes.

Apologies for the delay, I did what I always hate other people doing - start a thread and then disappear  :-[ :-[

I have entered both versions, but I was just a little confused.

So we have

John DOE    WHITE     Taunton 1234
John DOE    WHITE    Wells  1234

Alice WHITE    DOE    Taunton 1234
Alice WHITE    DOE     Wells   1234

Well you could contact the GRO and ask them about this and see what they say.  That's assuming they are willing to give you that information.

The distance between the two places is between 28 and 35 miles depending on what route you take.  So not exactly close by.   ???

one in Taunton District and the other in Wells District. Both page numbers are identical.

They are both volume 7c.
If the page number is identical, then for one of the districts the number will be outside the page range?

I think it may end up being outside the page range of both.
There's another strange entry/entries for that same quarter.
A lady or ladies, first names beginning J A, with entries for both Wells and Taunton and with the same page number
In that case the spouse's surnames are different!
What was going on?
John

Correct that quickly! The page number belongs in Wells
