Wood Family of Hadleigh, South Benfleet, Prittlewell
« on: Friday 08 December 17 04:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for more information on the ancestors and descendants of one Henry Wood (b. 1754, d. 1848). He had three children, two legitimate: Sarah (b. 1781) and Jonathan (b.1784, d. 1860). One illegitimate: Henry Wood Twin.
It seems that Sarah and Jonathan had different mothers however as on their baptismal record Jonathan's mother is listed as Jane whilst Sarah's is listed as Sarah.

The family seems to have risen into prominence with Henry and Jonathan owning a large bulk of land around the Hadleigh/South Benfleet area. Henry in his will is listed as gentlemen. Does this mean he descends from the nobility?

Thanks

Can't see a death notice, but have you seen this ad for sale of some of his estate?
Chelmsford Chronicle, Friday, September 15, 1848, Issue 4056, p.1.

Will keep looking for family details ...  :)

Anyone with sufficient means to support themselves in retirement could be referred to as Gent.

The farm he left his son as 938 acres so he wasn't short a penny or two.

Have you got Jonathan's will for more information on his family (as you say you are looking for descendants)?

One public tree on Ancestry gives him about 10 children.

Similarly Henry is in trees on Ancestry, around 6 children. (About 1814 to 1860)

The Essex Record Office has plenty of references to Jonathan Wood of Hadleigh and Benfleet.

I have not seen his will but through birth records etc. I found he had 11 children:

Jane m. Henry William King
Susannah
Jonathan m. Maria Lockwood
Maria m. Hardy Hills
Mary Ann m. Henry Wood Twin (her half uncle)
Eliza
Ann Nash m. ___ Boreham
Emma m. Joseph Augustus Browne
Harriet m. Rev. Joseph Baines
Henry Nash m. Mary Ann Tyrell
Louisa Ellen m. Alfred Tyrell

I am particularly interested in the descendants of Harriet Baines nee Wood as I discovered she came into possession of two portraits one of Henry and one of Jonathan which I think would be interesting to track down. Harriet and her family moved to Wales and had two daughters Alice and Edith.

Yes, Sarah Wood did marry William Hockley.

I would be particularly interested in seeing those records, however, I live in Australia and thus am unable to visit the record office and see them.

You can order copies from the Essex Record Office. The most enlightening would be his will.
