Forbes children b 1887-1894 ? Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
« on: Friday 08 December 17 12:58 GMT (UK) »
There were 6 children born to Robert Forbes and Jemima nee Henderson who m 4 Jul 1885 at Alexandra Hotel, Addington, Durban, Natal; I believe he was a sugar planter and they both were born in Scotland.
The children were John Stewart Forbes b 1887 d 1901-1914, Robert Henderson Forbes b 1887, Jessie Henderson Forbes b 1888, Natalie Elsie Forbes b 1890 d 21 Jul 1981 at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Leslie Alexander Forbes b 1892 and Douglas Forbes b 1894.
There seems to have been a lot of tooing and froing between Scotland and SA, and as Robert d 1916 in Edinburgh and his widow d 1924 there too, it would appear that he returned to Scotland to die but they obviously had property in SA so the children seemed to have returned and stayed in SA?
Is it possible to find the bmds' of the children please?

Might this be the same family ?

From 'Valiant Harvest - The Founding of the South African Sugar Industry 1848-1926' by Robert F Osborn, 1964.

Kruisfontein Sugar Estate 1860-1882on
"This estate in the Tugela division of Victoria County was started in 1860 by R Forbes ... still working 1882. Possibly the furthest estate of its kind from the coast ... on a distinctly higher plateau ..."

The map at front of book shows it inland between Umhlali to the north and Tongaati to the south.

sugarbakers yes could well be the main man but my knowledge of SA geography isn't very good.
Sandra I don't know if he, Douglas had a second name, the only records for the children were on the 1901 Scottish census for Row, Dunbartonshire which records their names birth years and places. I was 'lucky' with Jessie and Natalie as they were witnesses to their parents' passing.

Seems reasonable Sandra as his brother Leslie had the middle name of Alexander and the others all had middle names.
