Mixed Race Victorian Ancestry
« on: Friday 08 December 17 14:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone!

I am new to RootsChat and this is my first post.

I am university student conducting a research project on mixed race (Afro Caribbean & White) people in the Victorian Age, and was wondering if anyone has a family history involving mixed race ancestors from the roughly the 19th century that they would be willing to share?

Thanks so much,
Jordan

I know of an instance in my tree where work connections in the 1840s/50s in the caribbean resulted in at least 1 mixed-race descendant who eventually moved back to London, was a parish priest and brought up his own mixed heritage children in London. Not my direct line ancestor though. Is this the sort of thing you want?

You will need to make 2 more posts here before you can send and receive private messages but having done that, I can message you more details if you want.

African but not Caribbean, so I'm not sure if this fits your bill.

I am very distantly related to him by marriage and haven't done any research of my own but if you Google the name you will find numerous descendants (he had 8 children)

Welcome to RootsChat, Jordan.  An interesting research study  :)

not quite Victorian age, but...
In 1805 my Billy Blue who was a negro, married Elizabeth Williams reputedly 'a very fair Englishwoman' in Sydney, one month after their first child was born.   Both were convicts.
They had 7 children, all but the last one survived childhood.

Elizabeth died in 1824; Billy died in 1834 aged 99.

Thank you Billyblue, MagicMirror, and Annie65115 for your responses. I really appreciate the help! I will make sure to check out the website you provided MagicMirror and once I have enough post to send a private message I will contact you Annie65115 if that is alright? Billyblue I was wondering if you have anymore information on the couple's children and if the couple ever returned from Sydney?

Thanks again!

No Jordan, both Billy Blue and Elizabeth Blue lived the rest of their lives, and died, in Sydney, NSW.

what sort of information do you want about their children?
If you are wondering about their complexions, I know that Mary Ann Blue who was their grand-daughter who married my William Montgomery, was very 'dusky' from a photo I've seen.

In my generation, my brother and I are not alike- while we are both 'white' he had very dark hair and I am blonde and fair   :P :P .  And I keloid scar while he did not, as far as I recall.

In one of our cousin families, boy twins and their brother were all fair, while the two girls were dark haired and brown eyed.

Does it have to be Afro-carribean? or does Indian/White count?
