Catherine Owen, Caernarfonshire, Wales - Dating photographs
« on: Friday 08 December 17 20:13 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful for any help in dating these two photographs of my 3xGreat Grandmother, Catherine Owen. As a guide she lived from 1794 to 1877.

My guess is that these are not the same person . . .  the smaller photo would appear to date from an earlier time but the woman looks older . . . to me.  And I would guess she could be Catherine Owen.  the hair style with hair down over her ears looks more like 1860s to me.  Also the bonnet and 'cape/shawl'  look  older than the large photo.    - could be wrong!  ;)

The larger photo looks more 'modern'  and younger, and her hair line is very different from the other photo. Her head gear and costume look more '70s than the small photo.  My guess is that it is taken in the 1870s - and I don't think the woman looks in her 70s as she would be if born in 1794.

p.s.  if you go back to your original post and add Dating to the title, you will attract the dating experts.  :)

Do you think they might be mother and daughter - or daughter in law maybe?

I agree with Wiggy's comments about being a different woman. The smallest photo could be 1850s....it looks like a tinted daguerreotype.

I think this side by side comparison shows up what Wiggy and Carol are saying, the starkest difference I think being the forehead heights.

If you have the original photos it would help the dating experts a lot if you could post images of the whole photos (showing the edges), front and back.

Wiggy, the sleeves in the larger photo bother me. Could the two pictures be as much as thirty years apart, around 1890 and 1860?

I noticed them - some late 1870s sleeves are reasonably full - I am not good enough at this to be sure.   I don't think so .    :-\   . .  been known to be wrong . . often!!  ;)

The woman with the children would be circa 1895 - hair, hat, sleeves and bolero type jacket, with separate skirt and top.

The smaller photo is typical of late 1850s.

To quote from Jayne Shrimpton:
Quote
Her smooth, centrally parted hairstyle, draped low over the ears, was fashionable from around the mid-1850s through to the early 1860s, but the round open style of her bonnet, fastening under the chin with a broad silk ribbon tied ina  large bow, narrows the date to the late 1850s or 1860.

Obviously not the same woman, given these dates. Facial differences too - low forehead in the older lady for example.
