Louisa Viner ( nee Barnes )
« on: Saturday 09 December 17 06:26 GMT (UK) »
 :D
Hi, Looking for some help ,please , in tracing the resting place of my 4 x great grandmother.
She was born Louisa Barnes to parents Samuel Barnes & Ann Scrivens in Chelteham, Gloucestershire , England in 1815.She married James Viner in 1834.
The last record of her in England in 1881 with daughter Rosina Port ( nee Viner )
1886 finds her with her daughter 22 Broad St ,Richmond. Staten Island NY.
I did find a death entry for a Louisa Viner b 1815 d 13 Jan,1890 in Edgewater. Bergen County , New Jersey with the number 2195. I wonder if this could be her ???
Any leads would be appreciated .TIA  AG

Not sure why Edgewater New Jersey is coming up on New York death index - Shelly will probably correct us on that.

The original data on anc was listed as -   NY State Death Index, New York Department of Health, Albany, NY.
Address is given on this link.............

https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm

Reading this there would be a charge of $10

That second link is for vital records from the city of Albany, rather than New York state.  If you order from the state, the cost of the vital record is $22 and the information is here - https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/genealogy.htm  From what I hear, it's usually faster and sometimes cheaper to order from the town/city where the event occurred if possible.

The index says Edgewater, but not that it's New Jersey.  It may refer to a part of New York that no longer is known by that name.

There's a reference to the Village of Edgewater on Staten Island on an 1887 map here - https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~217352~5503666:Section-H--Clifton,-Village-of-Edge  Since Staten Island didn't become part of New York City until 1898, the state would have its vital records from the time it started statewide registration around 1881 until then.

Think this makes things a little clearer  ;)

Obtaining the death certificate from NY State may be one way to get it, but it's slow and expensive.  The death records that were in Edgewater's possession at the time of consolidation should be at the NYC Municipal Archives.  You could contact them to confirm whether they have the specific records you would want them to search.  (The 2195 number you have is a state index number but wouldn't be on the original copy held by the municipality.).

The first step I would recommend, though, is to visit the nearest Family History Centre.  The death register for Edgewater is available on FHL film # 1376368, which is available online, but only when viewed at an FHC.  I'm not sure what info is recorded in the register, but it may include everything you're looking for.
