It is my great great grandmother born in Geelong around 1870. The DNA match to my grandmother's cousin seems to indicate a Smoothy connection.

What was her name?

Great great grandmother was known as Maud Shipway (foster family surname) . On some documents she used McDonald as her maiden name.

Am I right in saying you think a SMOOTHY male or female was the parent of this child, Maud, born around 1870 in Geelong?
But you have been unable to locate any useful records to establish this one way or the other?

Do you have any other information at all about her and where did you discover what you do know.
Do you have her death certificate for instance?
On which specific documents do you see the name McDONALD.?

Hi Sue, yes based on DNA it seems probable that a Smoothy is a parent of Maud. But no documented proof. Have Maud's marriage and death certs. McDonald recorded on the birth of her eldest child Eva.

Eva was not the first born but her older brother had succumbed before her birth  :'(  :'(  See Jas SMITH’s birth #32829 and death #15911 both registered 1890, Vic BDM.  Both with parents as Jas and Maud and with McDonald as Maud’s former surname.

I had forgotten about the infant that died.
