John Toleman Collard help please
« on: Saturday 09 December 17 09:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I have a marriage of John Toleman Collard to Betsey Card in 1839 in Mark, Somerset. Then John disappears! In the 1851 England census I have Betsy Collard and it says (husband in America), I don't have access to USA records but I can see there seems to be a John T Collard naturalised in New York in 1880. Can anybody find out anything for me please as Betsy and her kids John and Albert seem to disappear too, unless Albert is in the workhouse very young, which I'm thinking if his dad went and never came back Betsy may have had to leave her kids!

Thanks in advance,

Kev

You can get access to USA records if you go to many of the public libraries which offer "Ancestry Library Edition".

You give no age/birthplace for JT Collard nor Betsey?
You give no age/birthplace for either known kid?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGPS-4F1 (1851 census for Betsy + 1 kid?)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ16-SHL (1841 for young John with Card Grandparents)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7FK-SHQ Albert (b 1847) in 1861

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGPM-4KW (Candidate Albert in 1851, with siblings? )

Hi, Betsy Card born 1819 mark, Somerset
John Toleman Collard born c1819 mark, somerset

Children:
John Collard 1839
Clement Collard 1843
Albert Collard 1845
Edward Collard 1848
All born in Mark, Somerset.

Clement, Albert and Edward all in the workhouse in 1851, John is with Betsy I'm guessing because he was working age 12 and therefore had an income.

Thanks, Pauline

So rather than me looking for stuff which you already hold, when do you last see these people?

The 1880 Naturalization - 20 October 1880 - gave the occupation of John T Collard as "segarmaker" - which could be a cigar maker.  Address of naturalized person 132 East 8th St NYC.
Name and address of witness R F Rosamond Bayonne NJ (does that name mean anything ?) No age given

I have Clement although can't find him after 1881 or a death for him.

No betsy or son John after 1851, can't find remarriage either, some possibles for Albert after 1861 but no definitely.

Not searching Edward yet.

No John the father anywhere. Maybe got him in 1841 and a possible Betsy in 1841, not together.

Hi Sandra, thanks for that, there were a few records for John T Collard, one said engraver but I can't find an occupation for him.  I will check out that witness name now

I'm pretty certain the naturalisation isn't him! I think he is John CALLARD,

Richard Rosamond had parents John Rosamond and Mary Ann Callard, found their marriage register and states her father as Robert Callard.

So I'm back to John Collard vanishing then   :'(

In case it helps with searching for any extended family members, I agree that the NY naturalization is probably not your missing guy, but it looks like he is a Callard rather than a Collard.

You can see the original copy of the naturalization record here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLMZ-WCVD - and he looks like Callard there.  It says he came to the US before age 18, so that would seem to rule out your guy.  This guy in the 1870 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M862-NPH and 1880 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ6Z-ZCW - is a cigarmaker living at locations fairly close to the address on the naturalization records.  He seems to be in New Jersey for the 1900 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9JG-J3L
