Confirmation of Mother's Maiden Name
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 08:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I want to confirm what I think is a maiden name of a mother on a Birth Registry. The child is Helen Lochead, father John, mother Marion. I think Marion's maiden name looks like Cook? I have attached an extract from the document.

It could be Cook, but it looks more like 'Coak' from the letters.
Perhaps just a badly formed second 'o' on the part of the writer.
Just looking at all possibilities.

Have you found any brothers or sisters of Helen to see what they give as the mother's surname?

I think the clerk may originally have written Cook and then altered the second o to a, to make Coak.

Good advice to look for siblings and/or a marriage.

Not sure if this marriage is a bit early but could confirm:

A marriage/banns 9 December 1785, Abbey, Paisley (SP parish records) - John Lochead and Marion Cook.

Just checked on this Rosie - SP have this as 21 Feb 1813, which fits with the OP's file name, and a better fit with the marriage that I found.

PS - Nothing on SP for 1821.

Thank you everyone for your help. I think I'll stick with Cook and see where that takes me.
