Sheffield Wills
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 10:28 GMT (UK) »
I have just discovered my father died in Sheffield in 1986 but does not appear to have had any next of kin at that time as a non-relative was the 'Informant'.  He had been estranged from the family for many years.

I cannot find any marriage in Sheffield for him or any child born at the relevant time (1952 onwards) and was wondering if he actually left a Will which might provide some further information or if there was no Will, possibly Letters of Administration.

I have his address at the time of his death.

Can anyone tell me how I might find this information.

Have you tried the probate index

Thanks Rosie - I did try this but no luck.  I don't imagine he had much in the way to leave.  I'm not sure what the procedure is in the UK if someone dies without a Will.  Does someone have to apply for Letters of Administration (or whatever)?

Yes they would have to apply for letters of administration but the entry would still appear on the probate index.  It would then show as Admin. against the entry

Still no luck I'm afraid.  I guess he probably had only a few personal effects that were disposed of by the person who was the Informant of his death - no relation.

I suppose that is quite likely  :'(

Was the address he died at a hospital or somewhere else that you may be able to check the occupants on electoral registers for around that time

He died at what was presumably his home (Coningsbury House, Sandygate Grove, Sheffield). I think this was a rented apartment.  The 'Informant' was a Ronald Peck of Crimicar Lane Sheffield.  As far as I can find out, Ronald Peck had been a Headmaster at a local school.  As he was about the same age as my father born 1913 (my father was born in 1910) he has since died.

I have no idea if these two men were friends or just acquaintances, or what.  I have tried Electoral Rolls but no luck.  I will try again though - might get lucky the second time.

Those apartments look as though they may have been quite new at that time  (I put the address into G*gle)  Hope you have some luck with electoral registers
