Tasmania Convict record

Hi there,

This is the convict record for William Stretton (b.1812) who was transported to Australia in 1846 for fifteen years. I was just wondering if anyone could explain the terms mentioned in this record (he got a 'ticket of leave' on the 15th of Feb 1853 and a 'conditional pardon' on the 19th Dec 1854. I also cannot make out the remarks by the side (recruited for C.P??)

Can someone help?

"A Ticket of Leave (TOL) was a document given to convicts when granting them freedom to work and live within a given district of the colony before their sentence expired or they were pardoned. TOL convicts could hire themselves out or be self-employed. They could also acquire property. Church attendance was compulsory, as was appearing before a Magistrate when required"

"Conditional Pardons (CP) freed convicts and were granted on the condition that convicts did not return to England or Ireland."

The remark is shorthand for "recommended for conditional pardon"

I was wondering if anyone could work out the first word in the 'position' column below '....by Thomas Stone, Green Ponds'

Possibly hired but not sure.

I was thinking either 'tried' or 'buried' but maybe wrong.

Hi,

Not too sure what the first word is but the remainder looks like  Thomas Stone of Green Ponds.  Gazette notices show that there was a Thomas Stone at Green Ponds.

I think that where it has PH 15 April 1849 means he became a passholder and could be hired out (which was part of the probation system). The remarks show a few days later on 21 April 1849 that he was hired by Thos Stone, with further dates showing 2 more hirings of 12 month periods.

That seems like the most probable case. I haven't been able to find anything about William after 1854 so don't know when he died or if if he returned back to England.

This shows an 1874 birth to William Stretton, labourer, and Janet Pearson (no formerly, so not married) at Constitution Hill in the district of Green Ponds

Trove results show that Thomas Stone's property, Horfield, was at Constitution Hill
Possibly him or his son??
