William George Blake/Maria Mary Howes-Marriage
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 12:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.
You helped me find Thomas Blake Birth 20th November 1919 Mitcham Surrey. I sent for his birth cert to find his parents which state as above but the only marriage I can find is " George William Blake/Maria Mary Howes  married 1930.)
Can anyone find another one please?
Thanks
Maggie

It would appear by searching the GRO index that this couple were having children prior to 1911 census
BLAKE, GRACE  VIOLET     mmn HOWES
1910  Sept  Quarter in CROYDON  Volume 02A  Page 362

This looks like the family in 1911

That census entry would make her quite old when she gave birth to Thomas  ::)

Maria Mary Howes Dec 1874 Wandsworth 1d 600 mmn Chance

Eliza Amelia Howes Dec 1869 Westminster 1a 422 mmn Chance

Death
Eliza Amelia Blake Mar 1896 Croydon 2a 186 age 26

Looks like William George married Eliza then took up with Maria after Eliza died. When did the law start to allow a man to marry his dead wife's sister. I know it was illegal at one time.

I would think the 1930 marriage is the correct one. They appear in the 1939 Register yob as 1868 for George William and 1874 for Maria.

......but the birth cert of Thomas 20th Nov 1919 gives his father William George Blake mother Maria Mary Howes. 1911 census has Maria as his wife. so the 1930 marriage can't be right.

It could be right, if (despite holding themselves as married) they didn't actually marry until later on.

That's what I thought, Avm,He couldn't marry Maria because it was illegal...makes sense.
