EDIT: seems my putative ancestor left too early to show up in subsequent records, at least in the village he came from. Records start in 1546, he left in 1523...

Certainly don't give up on registers, Thomas Cromwell who introduced them into England in 1538 got the idea from France where he came into contact with them earlier, so registers were in use I believe a generation earlier than here.
