Chaloners/Chalners in Lincolnshire
« on: Wednesday 13 December 17 23:38 GMT (UK) »
I am still looking into Thomas Chalner born in Fillingham in 1768. His father is John Chalner, married in 1756, but is he the John born at Market Rasen in 1713 (son of Mark) or a son of Hugh Chalner of Market Rasen and Wickenby? Another Mark is twice-married in the 1730s, first at Tetney and then, in 1739, at Clee. I am guessing he is the son of the earlier Mark. Does anyone know how Hugh and Mark are related?

The names of children can often be an indication of fathers' names.

There is one will which may hold clues, that of a Hugh CHALNER, Cordwainer of Market Rasen. He was buried 7 April 1746 and made his will a week or two before that. https://www.lincstothepast.com/Probate-copy-of-the-will-of-Hugh-Chalner/547485.record?pt=T

His wife Catherine may have remarried in 1748.

The Lincs Archive reference in the LCC Wills Calendar is 1746/33.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hugh Chalney/Chalny had a son, Thomas in 1734.

Hugh's widow married William Brooke and a person of that name was a witness at the marriage of Thomas Challner to Mary Barkwith.

There is a report on the death of Thomas Challner of Louth in the Stamford Mercury on 29th August 1776. He was also a cordwainer but his daughter?, Miss Catherine Challner, was the executor and possibly his only child, although not by Mary.

Mary Challner, widow, married Richard Sherwood in Louth in 1777.

Catherine married John Hazely in Louth in 1780.

P.S. I think Catherine was probably Thomas's sister, daughter of Hugh, born in 1744.
