Ah! So just a co-incidence of a surname with Patrick And John at Kembla. ::)
It happens ;)

I am going to try emailing the newspaper that printed his obit.  He was a single man, I believe, yet someone knew a lot about his family, including mine in the states.  They may have additional info on the original notice.  I remember my dad calling us all together to tell us of his death and they we were remembered in his will in a small way.

Yes, those details were to hand almost immediately for whoever placed the death notice.. A matter of 2 days between death and notice.
Entirely possible he had a companion sharing his address whose surname was different from his, but who knew his family details .
We can only search rolls by name, not by address.

Would you agree the details were perfectly accurate?

Yes, they were.f. It appears that he lived in what we call a rooming or boarding house - Lorray Guest House.

There was also a funeral notice, in case you want to know where he was buried:

Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday, August 22, 1959
Gribben – The Relatives and Friends of the late John Gribben of “Lorray” Guest House, Port Kembla, are invited to attend his Funeral; to leave St.Patrick’s church, Port Kembla, This Saturday, after prayers at 10 a.m., for the Catholic Cemetery, Wollongong.
Requiem Mass is to be celebrated at 7a.m.
H. Parsons, Wollongong

He seems to have died intestate, so there is a fair chance that there was no will, and that next of kin inherited via whatever legal rules existed at the time. (His probate would hopefully supply more info)

Wonder if there is any assistance available through this cemetery link.

Perhaps worth an inquiry. You might find who paid the funeral expenses.

Came up empty.  I guess the Catholic cemetery is not part of their group.
