Mapped Folders
« on: Friday 15 December 17 16:09 GMT (UK) »
I have a number of Folders on a Network Attached Storage that I have mapped to specific drive letters on my PC.   Following the latest Windows 10 - I think called "The Fall" or similar, my PC is no longer automatically making these drive letters accessible.

If I look in File Explorer, each has a red cross against it.   If I click on each in turn, they fully map and become green and I can then use them as before.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong ?

When you select the "map network drive" isn't there a check option to reconnect when you sign in? If so, just remap them and check this box.

Simon,

I'm glad you said that as I was sure that was once an option - no longer there now though.

I have read somewhere that in the latest Windows 10 update Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, ::) ::) ::) switched off something network related (can't find the exact details at the moment). There are also issues with find assorted things on a network with no apparent standard fix. That problem one has been around since the previous update because we have that problem at home  >:(

Harry,

I have Windows 10 Creators Fall update and I have just looked and the option is still there ie

Open File Explorer

Select This PC from the left pane. Then, on the Computer tab, select Map network drive.

The check box 'Reconnect at sign-on' is shown under the box for the Drive you are about to map.

Simon,

Thanks, they've hidden that well !

As it happens, my drive letters are shown as "reconnect on sign-in" already.   I'm going to try an experiment with mapping a new folder to see whether it doesn't like previously mapped items.

You have to love the large software vendors:

I've mapped another folder to a drive letter and now when I boot the machine, one of the folders that didn't automatically map now does.   The problem is, the other "old" maps still need to be manually connected as does the "new" one ::) ::)

After a lot of reading, it would appear that the problem is one of timing.   Windows is trying to map the drives to their folders before the network is fully ready.

It would appear that I have been lucky as there is a lot of discussion that this function has not worked consistently since Windows XP.   Microsoft are aware but have elected not to fix the problem.
