Sykes/Roberts
« on: Saturday 16 December 17 12:06 GMT (UK) »
Im looking for a passenger list or immigration record for Allen Frederick Sykes, born 1882 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England who after fighting the Boer War left England for Canada apparently early 1904.

By the time of the 1906 Canada census he was working as a carpenter and living in LeBret Sask under the name of Alfred Frederick Roberts. He was C of E but became a Catholic when baptised at the Sacred Heart Church in LeBret on July 27,1906 but as Joseph Arthur Frederick Roberts. On Feb. 12,1907 he married (under the name of Arthur Frederick Roberts) Clementine Flora McArthur at the Sacred Heart Church in LeBret. He and his wife went on to have 4 children. The 1916 census has Arthur Roberts , born 1882 England, labourer odd jobs with his wife For a, born 1882 Sask and his four children born between 1909 and 1916 in LeBret. He later enlisted for service in WW 1 in Regina and was killed in France. His wife then went on to marry a Mr Desjarlais.

In addition to Mr Sykes incoming passenger list I am also looking for any information relating to his name changes in Canada as I would like to know the reason for those name changes. Also would like the marriage record for his widow to Mr Desjarlais. I did find a widower by the name of Desjarlais living next door to the Roberts family in the 1916 census with his daughters and mother. Mr Desjarlais was given as age 49 born 1869 in Sask in the census and I suspect he is the one who married Mrs Roberts but I could not read his forename in the census. Death record for Mr and Mrs Desjarlais would also be helpful.

Hi,

The 49year old Desjarlais who lives next door on the 1916 census is female.  She is a widow.  Her name appears to be Melany.

Flora Desjarlais, nee McArthur died in Vancouver, BC on Dec 9 1986, aged 102.  Her husband's name had been Alexander Desjarlais.

Excellent information about death of Flora and Alexander Desjarlais. This is the family group I was looking for. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Can you help with their marriage record?  Flora Desjarlais was the widow of Mr Roberts but as I knew and the records you gave confirms her maiden name was McArthur or Macarthur or as her death record shows " MacCarther". I have her born in Saskatchewan 1882 but her death record says 1884. Her marriage to Arthur Frederick Roberts Feb. 12,1907 at Lebret Sask gave her name as Clementine Flora McArthur the daughter of James Robert McArthur and Anne McArthur. Alexander Desjarlais death record gave his wife as Flora MacArthur. She most often went by the name of Flora rather than Clementine (as it was in the 1916 Sask census). I know her first husband Mr Roberts died ww1 in 1916 so obviously her marriage to Desjarlis was sometime after October 6,1916 but before 1920 as she is referred to in 1920 as Mrs C.F. Desjarlais.

Hi,

Unfortunately the Sask. Catholic Parish records are very spotty, and the Province has not
transcribed marriages (at all  ???) yet. See here,
http://genealogy.ehealthsask.ca/vsgs_srch.aspx

Having said that, on Alexander Desjarlais' baptism record there is a notation in the margin,
married Flora McArthur November 7, 1918 in LeBret, Sask.

Hi,

You have opened another thread on the Roberts children...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=784225.msg6390755#msg6390755

did you also want information about the Desjarlais children?

Mabel's obituary

I think this is her sister Beatrice Grant (informant on their father's death cert)

Thank you both for your valuable input. EXCELLENT WORK

For some unknown reason was not able to access the military record for Mr Roberts or the 1921 census. It seems that there is a connection problem.

Yes I am interested in any children born to Flora and her husband Alexander Deasjarlais. it appears from what you have given me that the only two I am lacking information for are the last two listed in the 1921 census given by you as the twins Mabel and Edward unless Mabel is the same person as Mary Mabel Desjarlais McLean.
