.... It did not mention the girls, but the cemetery in Dunedin mentioned Elizabeth Stirling Aitken as buried with Thomas.  She died at 19 which matches your shipping record.

Hi ... just for your records, the daughter's correct name appears to have been Eliza (rather than "Elizabeth").  :)

Here is the headstone inscription for Eliza and Thomas >

Northern Cemetery - Dunedin, Otago,  NZ

AITKEN - Block 20 - Plot 8
"S.T.T.M.O.  Eliza Stirling, d/o T. and J. AITKEN, late of Kirkcaldy, Scotland, who died 17 October 1876, aged 20 years.
Also - Thomas AITKEN - died 24 February 1899 - aged 75 years. "

[NZ Death Index has "AITKEN - Eliza Stirling - 19 years. "  ]

Thanks for the corrections.  I'm coming along, but not at your super speed.  Dau Jane may have died in 1911 or else she married.  There are 2 possibilities, but nothing definite.  I can't find a newspaper reference. I also found 4 other children of Thomas who may not have emigrated.  The tree I was pointed to has only Eliza as a child.  I;m trying to see if the other 4 children survived or emigrated.  Thomas McKenzie 1862, James Crouden Meldrum 1866, David 1855, Alice 1858

I have a picture of Margaret Boyle (Aitken) and also of a Salvation Army lady, but the photograph album is not shelved.  I need to see if that is an Aitken or a Kyle lady.

Hi Kat  ... I'll keep looking for you.

I'll go back too to the tree I found - it may be different to the one you were viewing ??
Thought I saw the Thomas McKenzie AITKEN birth 1862 with a death in Scotland of 1863  ??
And was there a daughter Alice who died as an infant ??

UPDATE :    Sadly, the 4 children you mentioned above, all died (at Perth) as infants.

AITKEN
Thomas McKenzie - 1862-1863
James Crouden Meldrum - 1866-1867 - aged 8 months
David - 1855 - 1856 - aged 4months
Alice - 1858-1859 - aged 9 months :

Edited to add ... at least three of above deaths are supported by death certificates attached to the "Tree".

Hi

Just further to my Reply # 14 .... "tree" has a New Zealand Death certificate for Thomas AITKEN 1899.   As was the case with NZ B D and M records, they carried rather a lot more information than those of the UK certs.

At the time of Thomas' death (1899), provision was made to record "surviving issue" (not by name but by sex and age).

Thomas' death record showed >   2 females - ages 38 and 34 years.

So one can conclude they were Margaret (Maggie) and Jane (junior).

Very good.  I can't get to that tree.  So Jane is alive 1899.
I found the Kyle/Aitken photos, but not the one of a Salvation Army lady in an old Victorian dress.  This may mean it is Jane. I'll have to write my mother.  Is there any possibility Jane would change her name when joining (if she did?)  Whoever it is was proud of her work as it was a professional picture.  Would a single lady live on her own?

As you have access to the tree, does it have Margaret Kyle b 1882, dau of Margaret Boyle Aitken & Alex Kyle.  She either is Margaret Aitken Kyle m. David Martin (no location) or else Margaret m. John Harold Meek in the family church of Knox Presbyterian in Dunedin.  I had assumed it was Meek, but the Aitken middle name is very hard to pass up now that I see it.
