(*Completed with thanks*)How do I edit my images for 2.2mb to 500kb.
« on: Saturday 16 December 17 18:17 GMT (UK) »
I have two photos of family members, from a small locket, sent by its owner in USA.  Each is about 2.2 MB and I have been unable to reduce them to 500Kb or below as required.  I have Paint and Gimp on my laptop but am not experienced in using them.
Can any kind Rootschatter help please?

Ainslie

Does this work?  There is also a help file on here.
Give it a go and see as I do not use gimp
WORK ON A COPY<<

With GIMP open, go to File > Open and select an image.
Go to Image > Scale Image.
A Scale Image dialog box will appear like the one pictured below.
Enter new Image Size and Resolution values.
Select Interpolation method.
Click OK to accept the changes.

Similar procedure in paint, there's a resize button within the home tab.

To bring 2.2mb down to under 500k you're probably looking at reducing by a significant percentage.  Don't trash your original, always save as in case you need to repeat.

I'm a GIMP user.

First of all COPY THE IMAGE. Never work with the original, then you can't lose.
There are a number of methods but for simplicity....

1) Load pic into GIMP
2) Click on IMAGE, Click PROPERTIES, if its any other file type than JPG, go to FILE and EXPORT as a JPG .....this alone will decrease the file size. If it is already a JPG....continue....
3) Click on SCALE IMAGE
4) In the top section of the window that opens, click the little box that probably says 'PX' and select '%'
5) Select the down arrow and reduce it from 100% to around 35%
6) Click on FILE then EXPORT. If the file is called, for example 'Aunt Mary' then rename it as 'Aunt Mary35' ( so that you can identify which is which) and click OK

There may be a bit of trial and error here so.... right click on your newly saved image and select 'PROPERTIES'...... here you will see the new file size. If its still too high or too low, delete it and repeat the above as necessary USING THE ORIGINAL COPY don't try re-using 'Aunt Mary35'.

If you are still struggling, then PM me.

Thank you all for suggestions and advice.  I was away from the keyboard all yesterday and am about to try them out, so I have crossed fingers and will see what happens.  I will report back.
Ainslie

Back again to say that I have now succeeded in reducing the image and it is awaiting moderation as a new post.
Many thanks to all again.
