His will says he was from Jersey Isle  but people in Jersey say there is no record .  sarah Strickland was born  Sunk Island 1733. I don't know where else to look. Thanks, (*)

Hi Julia

Welcome to rootschat.  :)

What information do you have for the names, dates/places of birth for the children born prior to immigration.  Do you have the marriage of William to Sarah Strickland

Rosie  :)

The name Vokey does not appear in any Jersey records which makes me think that it did not start out as that but has changed over the years. Possible candidates could be Vautier, Vaudin, Vauquier or Valpy, most of which are common Jersey names.
If Sarah was a Channel Islander it is likely that she came from Sark rather than Sunk Island.

I was thinking maybe via Jersey Island .I know people on Jersey language is French and where the Vokeys Settled in Newfoundland was all English. I'm assuming they didn't come from Jersey. Have you looked for Sarah in the parish records for Sunk Island? Or neighbouring parishes?

This link may help provide a little context:

According to Genuki  http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Extraparochial/SunkislandPRlocation there are no parish records for Sunk Island prior to 1820.  :'(
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Is Mary 1782 a typo?
I doubt there would be a 25-year gap between two of the children (not to mention the age of the parents)!
