Census Enigma
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 08:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,
In a Liverpool 1911 I have a Leah Goldstein born 1874 in Russia widow. Married 20 years.  Children Gertrude(Gertie) born 1895 St. Georges in the East, London and Lazarus born 1899 Whitechapel, London.  Leahs maiden name from a Manchester Alien Record states her maiden name Labisky. Could be or not depends on how someone hears the name.
From the MC of Gertrude her father was David Goldstein deceased.  Found he died in 1910 in Liverpool.
Never found the BC of the children, apart from 4 relating to Lazarus.  Being before 1911 no mother is mentioned.  Have'nt ordered BC's to find out.
Found out now that the GRO now gives the mothers' maiden name for all births.
Checking the GRO the nearest I have found is a Rachel Goldstein 1895 Whitechapel, mother Lebovitch and a Lazarus Goldstein 1899 Whitechapel, mother Lebovitz.
Gertrude  could have named Rachel and later on called Gertrude as this sometimes did happen. My mother was born Annie and called Pearl and later Pearl Annie.
Now trying to find in a 1901 Census both Rachel and Lazarus together to see who their parents are.
Only found a Wolf & Sophis Goldstein with a Rachel 1895 Whitechapel and Lazarus 1896 Whitechapel.  A Jacob & Annie Goldstein with a Lazarus 1899 Whitechapel.  A Joseph & RAchel with a Lazarus 1899 Whitechapel.  A Jacob & Rachel with a Lazarus 1899 Whitechapel.

So my dear friends any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi there

Leah's husband you say was David Goldstein who died in West Derby district Jun qtr 1910 aged 50 - is that confirmed?

I find your post a little hard to follow - but presumably the mission is to find Leah and her children Gertrude b c 1893* and Lazarus b c 1899 in the 1901 census - Leah's husband being David?

*I'm not sure why you have Gertrude's birthdate as 1895?

avm228,
David Goldsteins' death is a presumption as Leah(widow) and children were in Liverpool in 1911 and the MC of Gertrude states David Goldstein deceased. He is the only one I can find that fits in. Need to check the electoral roll for 16 Fortesque Street, West Derby for years preceeding 1911. Not possible to go the library as I don't live in the UK.

Gertrude 1895; 1911 = 1893, MC = 1892, Burial Record = 28/02/1895.

Think I can discount the Lebovitch connection as you found  Lazarus "1898" Whitechapel, mmn Leibiski.  Thank you very much for that. Will check the various years on GRO for Gertrude.
So it would appear they were all in London in 1901.

Leah must have lied when she said on the Aliens record that she came to the UK in 1910.

Really appreciate your input, thank you

Steve

In Gore's 1911 Liverpool Directory (which would have been prepared in 1910), Mrs Leah Goldstein is a shopkeeper at 14 Fortescue Street.

ShaunJ,
Many thanks for that input. Proves she was there in 1910.  Strangely when Gertrude and Hyman married in 1913 Liverpool their MC states for both numer 14. Must have been a flat above.

Hi heywood,
Some  time ago a guy in Israel wrote to me and told me Leah Goldstein(widow) married Lieb Kapatofsky in 1931 in Manchester and that she had two children Gertie and Lazarus. Lieb died in 1936. The Aliens Register states Kapatofsky and she was living at  69 Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill.  This is the address of my grandparents at the time.  My late mother told us her g.mother raised chickens in the back yard.  This was something Lieb and Leah did in their backyard before his Death.
Its the Salford City Police Register of Aliens.  This was found when they were demolishing the police station.  Most records have been bombed or destroyed.
