Shipping Record "Windsor" in 1856
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 08:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I am doing some research for a cousin whose ancestor was Chinese National. According to one family report he arrived aboard the "Windsor " in 1856.

I would like to know where this ship docked and whether it was possible that this person was aboard. His Australian name was James Fong but I dont know if he emigrated using that name.

Thanking you in anticipation, Dale

Hi Dale,
There are a few mentions of a transport ship Windsor transporting troops in 1856.   It arrived in Hobart from Melbourne in late December 1855 and set out for Portsmouth in late January 1856.  It was spoken off L'Agullias in late March 1856.  I can't see any mention of a return voyage in 1856 ...

You can search passenger lists for Sydney arrivals here https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/assisted-immigrants-digital-shipping-lists - no mention of Windsor in 1856

Mariners and ships in Australian waters is usually a good site to search for shipping arrivals, crew and passengers but it is currently experiencing some problems http://marinersandships.com.au/search.htm

Arrived (HOBSON’S BAY)
February 12 – Windsor, ship 1,099 tons, from Portsmouth, 14th September, General cargo, Two passengers, Cleve Brothers, agents.

Windsor, from London and Portsmouth

Windsor, ship 1099 tons, Joseph McKenzie from London  via Portsmouth, 30th September  Passengers- Cabin : Messrs R Scott, A Barrow.  Cleve Brothers and Co, agents.

Notice there's only mention of two passengers - may I mention that those two are cabin passengers, and are named .... - notice that there's no mention of STEERAGE passengers - there may have been NONE, or there may have been a number of steerage passengers.  If those in steerage were not assisted passengers, then steerage were basically considered as 'cargo' and so not needed to be fully detailed on shipping recorded.  I think you will need to search further for the actual shipping manifests in Victoria's public archival holdings.
