Bawdy Georgians - Buckinghamshire FHS January Talk At Bletchley
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 10:49 GMT (UK) »
Bawdy Georgians
William Cowper, who lived in north Buckinghamshire for 28 years, was the leading poet of the late 18th century. He was Jane Austen’s favourite and was quoted and referenced in Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Emma. But while Jane Austen only hinted at the undercurrents of the Georgian world, Cowper was actively involved in his life and writing and though not entirely free of controversy himself, was shocked at some of the scandals of the day. Speaker Tom Jones introduces Cowper and touches on the tumult of the time, but through him focuses on the surprising role and situation of women in Georgian society.
