ELLIS Family and William Stone, DAWLISH 1940s & 50s
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 11:00 GMT (UK) »
My great-great uncle, William Stone (1857-1958), sometimes known as "The Squire of Piccadilly", used to stay with F.W. Ellis and Mrs Ellis and their daughter, Glenys, in Henty Avenue, Dawlish for 2 months in the winter and 2 months in the summer towards the end of his life. Does anyone have any recollection of this, please?

Hi "Jane Campbell"

WELCOME ! to Rootschat.

What exactly are you looking for?

You have given two elements of William Stone's past which suggest that you know quite a lot about him. However not much about Mr & Mrs FWEllis + dau Glenys.

Did Glenys (born Wales?) marry in the early 1960's?
She may still be alive so we may not discuss her.

I could not see anything about "Squire / Picadilly" - what do you have?

We really do want to help, so anything you can provide to cut short research may help.
Be a real waste if we ALL have to replicate ALL the research already done?

Ray
ps I am only minutes from Henty Avenue . . . . .

Thank you very much for your reply, Ray. I am looking for memories or recollections of my great-great-uncle William Stone when he stayed with F.W. Ellis and his family for 2 months in the winter and 2 months in the summer in the 1940s and 1950s at their home, Stella Maris, Henty Avenue, Dawlish.
Perhaps a contributor to this forum may remember him or them? F.W. Ellis worked for William Stone, who was a very wealthy man and lived to a great age, 101. His memoirs were published in "The Squire of Piccadilly" in 1951. Attached is a photo of William Stone, who is on the right, in 1951. Is the man on the left F.W. Ellis? I would love to know! Can anyone identify him?

Welcome to Rootschat Jane  :)

Have you tried contacting the local Dawlish newspaper?

Someone who knows the area well and lived there for ages may come forward and be able to help.

Hi Stevie and welcome to Rootschat,to enable you to use the personal messaging system you will need to post here at least once more. You will then be able to mail Jane off the boards and exchange more private info.

Oh dear I notice that Jane has not been online since 18th Dec 2017,but as long as she has not changed her email address she will be notified that we have both posted here and hopefully come back online and reply.
